Hey California, Don’t Get Rid of the Promotional Coffee Mugs Just Yet!

Last Friday, February 18, California Governor Jerry Brown told state agencies they would no longer be able to purchase or distribute branded promotional products such as logo apparel, promotional coffee mugs, and more. The move was the latest of Brown’s attempts to decrease the state’s multi-billion dollar budget deficit; previous initiatives to reduce the deficit included minimizing the number of employees who carry government issued cell phones.

During a recession, many companies follow Brown’s train of thought and cut their advertising budget as an attempt to save money. However, studies released by industry experts at PPAI show that there are many upsides to marketing in a down economy. For example, “marketing during a sluggish economy generates a more positive perception of your company; it shows a strong commitment to your products and services.”

Avoid Sharks- Have Fun in the Sun with Promotional Beach Items

Planning on spending your spring break or family vacation on the coast of Florida? If yes, fun in the sun will be better spent with promotional beach items than boogie boarding and snorkeling.

Yesterday, CBS National News reported that thousands of sharks were spotted swarming just 50 yards off the coast of Boca Raton, Florida. Biologists did confirm that during this seasonal transition from winter to spring, it is normal to see this type of behavior from sharks. The large number of sharks and their proximity to the coast is a typical migratory and feeding pattern. The sharks travel close to shore so they can feed on the bait fish trapped near the coast. Post-Jeopardy Plans for IBM’s Watson May Include Promotional Healthcare Products

If you watched Jeopardy! any night this week, you might have noticed something a little different. Watson, a computerized robot programmed by IBM, appeared between Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter,  two of the top ranking contestants of all times. Following a tie with Rutter on Monday night, Watson blew his competitors out of the water on Tuesday and Wednesday. So, what’s a robot to do after defeating two former Jeopardy! champs?

According to CNN.com, IBM invested many years – as well as millions of dollars – in Watson. Thus, it’s understandable that they want to find an applicable use for Watson’s premier technology. So far, sources at CNN say that IBM has discussed the idea of “Watson, M.D.,” a tool that would be able to combine online resources with patient interviews, test results, and personal medical histories to help doctors diagnose their patients. If that’s the case, hospitals will certainly need to use promotional healthcare products to publicize their new technology. But, don’t purchase promotional healthcare products just yet; other possible applications for Watson include government, engineering, and business.

Good-bye Books…Hello Electronic Promotional Items

Today Borders Group announced it was filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.  Borders president, Mike Edwards said the current environment of curtailed customer spending, the lack of competitive capital resources, and other business negotiations has caused the group to go under.

However, in an article by Barron’s columnist Tiernan Ray, Ray wrote mega bookseller Barnes & Noble is expected to have a positive EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, deductions, and amortization) of $104 million in 2013.

Promotional Products to Enhance the Best 2011 Super Bowl Ads

If you’re one of the millions of people who watched the Super Bowl last night, you probably saw some great- and some terrible- new commercials. Judging by the buzz all over the Internet this morning, Volkswagen’s “The Force” (shown above) was a huge success, as was E-Trade’s “Tailor” spot. While Super Bowl ads provide great exposure for an advertiser (106.5 million people watched the big game in 2010), they come at a hefty price tag of $3 million for a 30 second spot. Furthermore, any company that plans to run an ad during the Super Bowl must plan ahead significantly, as space generally sells out by September of the previous year.

So, how do companies ensure that the planning and expenses are worth the effort? Effective advertising generally requires that a brand tells a story and furthermore, that the story is relatable. In addition to telling a relatable story, companies can also use promotional products to enforce the message long after the commercial ends. According to a study by the industry experts at PPAI, combining promotional products with a television advertisement results in a 69% increase in brand interest and a 52% increase in referral value.
