The New York Times on Promotional Products

From the personalized coffee mugs at your local Starbucks to the 10-year-old t-shirt emblazoned with a high school logo that your cube-mate insists on wearing every casual Friday, promotional products are all around you. But just how effective are these branded gifts and giveaways?

Incredibly powerful, according to MP Mueller, author of The New York Times’ small business blog, You’re the Boss. Mueller arrives at this answer by way of a letter opener. But this isn’t just any letter opener. “In the clear acrylic handle,” Mueller writes, “float[s] a mini uterus with two pills strategically placed where the ovaries normally reside, alongside the drug’s name…”

From Promotional Calendars to Your Wardrobe: Happy Cow Appreciation Day!

In the South, Chick-fil-A is no longer merely a fast food chain; it is a wildly popular brand that serves up smiles and happiness along with delicious fried chicken. Every brand strives to connect with end users on an emotional and personal level, but Chick-fil-A truly goes above and beyond to satisfy its customers.

The organization’s lovable bovine mascots, featured on Chick-fil-A promotional calendars, billboards, print collateral and in television ads, have built up such a tremendous following that it seemed logical for Chick-fil-A to create a Cow Appreciation Day to recognize these hoofed marketing icons. Last year on Cow Appreciation Day, over 450,000 customers dressed in cow costumes to earn free food from Chick-fil-A, and even more cow-obsessed patrons are expected to participate in today’s second annual Cow Appreciation Day festivities.

Get “Athlete” Fit with Mixed Martial Arts

boxing glovesIn an article from the New York Times, health columnist Joe Brescia, explained how professional athletes are incorporating mixed martial arts into their work out regimens as a way to increase their mental and physical performance. However “new-age” this training routine may seem, the art of mixed martial arts is hardly “new-age;” in fact this cultural practice even dates back to ancient Greece.

During this era, Olympians would train using a similar combat sport called, “pankration.” Through out history various cultures’ combat sports melded together until the earliest form of modern mixed martial arts, “merikan,” was formed during the early 1900’s. “Merikan” incorporates both European and Japanese styles of fighting.

Fast forward to today, professional baseball players and football players claim that training with mixed martial arts is creating a competitive edge over their colleagues.  So much so, athletes like Adam Dunn of the Chicago White Sox, Brad Penny of the Detroit Tigers, Russell Martin of the Yankees, and the entire Atlanta Falcons’ team are keeping their routines under wraps as if they were part of their playbooks.

So how does it work? The MMA (mixed martial arts) trainers put together sequences that mimic how athletes play. For example, in order to throw a pitch, a pitcher’s movement involves lifting the knee, throwing the arm forward, and swinging the opposite back leg. In order to strengthen the muscles that control these movements, the trainer mirrors a pitcher’s sequence by having them raise the knee, forward punch, and end with a back kick.

One could argue promotional fitness accessories, like tracking monitors and punching bags could encourage any individual to improve their overall performance; but these teams and players are “drinking the kool-aid.” With this “new” training routine in place, some players even claim it’s improving their mental game, too.

Promotional Health and Beauty Products to Help Increase Sleep

As society continues to fall prey to the inundation of  new technological advancements, many people are beginning to regard sleep as an inconvenient necessity that simply interrupts one’s penchant to stay connected to the digital world.

A number of studies conducted by the National Sleep Foundation recently accused technology of invading the bedroom and identified the increased use of certain electronic devices in the hour before bedtime as a main contributing factor to our nation’s poor sleeping habits. Nearly 95 percent of respondents in the study reported using cell phones and computers before going to sleep and approximately two thirds admitted to not getting sufficient amounts of rest during the week.

The reluctance, however, to relinquish the use of electronic devices in favor of adequate sleep may be more detrimental to people’s health than even they may realize. In fact, another study conducted from 1998 to 2002 revealed that after a fourteen day testing period those who received six hours of sleep were just as incapable of normal functioning as people who had been deprived of sleep for 24 consistent hours.

The study reiterated the fact that not every person has the same sleeping habits, however, because the sleep deprived among us are simply too sleep deprived to properly assess our own needs it is important to recognize certain factors that can inhibit our ability to get the recommended eight hours of sleep per night. Lack of physical activity, aging, poor diet, certain medications and the inverse relationship between cell phone and computer use and sleep can all interfere with our ability to live a healthier lifestyle.

Promotional Pet Products for Adopt-a-Cat Month

My cat can turn pretty much any promotional product (or even the packaging for any promotional product) into a promotional pet product. He’s like a five-year-old kid in the way he can keep himself entertained with the simplest of things: if you’re a cat, it seems, reusable grocery bags make a great playhouse, foil balls are pretty fun to chase around in circles, and there’s nothing more relaxing than scratching up a piece of corrugated cardboard.

June is Adopt-a-Cat Month, and if you’ve got an open heart, a steady cash flow, and a bunch of grocery totes and leftover foil lying around your house, you’re a perfect candidate for cat adoption. The American Humane Association reports on their website that springtime is “kitten season,” which means that thousands of kittens across the country have been placed in shelters, where they’re waiting to find a “forever home.”

When I adopted my cat, Pip, from PAWS Atlanta last summer, I loaded up on promotional pet products from the shelter. Every time I use these items I’m reminded of the life I saved by adopting a pet. In addition to custom pet items, the American Humane Association has created a checklist of things you might want to consider when you’re preparing to adopt a cat:

  1. If you’re thinking about adopting a cat, consider taking home two.
  2. Find a cat whose personality meches with yours.
  3. Pick out a veterinarian ahead of time and schedule a visit within the first few days following the adoption.
  4. Make sure everyone in the house is prepared to have a cat before it comes home.
  5. Budget for the short- and long-term costs of a cat.
  6. Stock up on supplies before the cat arrives.
  7. Cat-proof your home.
  8. Go slowly when introducing your cat to new friends and family.
  9. Be sure to include your new pet in your family’s emergency plan.
  10. If you’re considering giving a cat as a gift, make sure the recipient is an active participant in the adoption process.

As you can see, there are a few steps you’ll want to take to prepare your heart and home for a new pet, but it’s a commitment that is certainly worthwhile.

Track Your Steps Toward Making a Difference With Promotional Pedometers

PedometerThis spring, the weekends in Atlanta have been full of various philanthropic and community fundraising races and walk-a-thons. Every week I come across another advertisement for the next big race, so when my neighborhood began advertising for our own local 5k fundraiser for our area elementary schools, I figured it was time for me to join in on the experience and make a difference.

Many individuals and companies continuously support and participate in these fundraising events, so as I signed up for my 5k, I thought wouldn’t it be interesting to track how many steps frequent participants take in their efforts to support these great causes? As I pondered more about this revelation, I came to the conclusion of promotional pedometers!

How neat would it be to say that I have taken one hundred thousand-something steps for a great cause? If sponsors or registration sites were to include promotional pedometers in their registration costs, everyone could track their “steps toward success.” Additionally, these promotional pedometers could potentially inspire participants to become proactive about their health.

However people choose to make use of their promotional pedometers, these tiny little objects have the potential to motivate and inspire individuals to take strides towards better living.
