Great Lakes Tornado Warning and Promotional Umbrellas

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Trending Topic Tuesday,” where we share our take on what’s going on in the world and what promotional products would appropriately (or inappropriately) market the subject matter.

Everyone living in the Great Lakes region, especially Chicago and northern Illinois, needs to grab their promotional umbrellas before heading outside this morning. Area tornado warnings expired at 8 a.m., but heavy rain and winds up to 60 or 70 miles per hour are expected to continue throughout the day. In addition, be sure to check flight schedules if you are flying in or out of Chicago, as power outages and delays have been reported throughout the city.

Bobby Cox: Honor Retirement with Personalized Photo Albums

Atlanta Braves’ Manager Bobby Cox ended his career last night with a 3-2 loss over the San Francisco Giants in the first round of the playoffs. As the series came to a close, the Giants tipped their hats to Cox while Braves fans turned their eyes to the jumbotron to watch a video tribute to the retiring manager. Cox has spent more than half of a century in a baseball uniform- as a player, coach, manager and general manager- finishing fourth for the number of regular season wins. Cox is not alone in his decision to retire this year; he is joined by the Chicago Cubs’ Lou Piniella, the New York Yankees’ Joe Torre, and others. Nobel Prize Leads to New Technology for Custom Radios, Electronics and Cars

This morning, the 2010 Nobel Prize for physics was awarded to Russian-born scientists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov for their work with graphene, a form of carbon that is just one atom thick. Graphene is the thinnest material ever to be discovered or extracted and also the strongest and most durable. The discovery of graphene will likely result in faster and higher quality electronics, including computers, custom radios, and touch screen items; in a statement to the press, Nobelprize.org also said that, in the future, cars, airplanes and satellites are likely to be constructed from graphene.

Reggie Bush Injury: No More Rush Awards for the Saints?

Reggie Bush injured his leg last night during a fourth quarter punt against the San Francisco 49ers. The New Orleans Saints running back was helped off the field and did not return to the game. According to unknown sources cited on ESPN and NewOrleans.com, Bush suffered from a fracture or break in his right leg and will be out for at least 6 weeks. News of Bush’s injury is disappointing to New Orleans’ Saints fans, who were hoping for another great season following last year’s Super Bowl win. Bush’s absence from the NFL could significantly decrease the Saints’ chances of winning another Vince Lomardi Trophy and this is just the latest of many recent headlines about Bush and rush awards. Bush returned his Trophy last Tuesday after officials concluded that he accepted gifts from sports agents while under contract with the University of Southern California. Sports fans should know more about the injury when Bush returns to New Orleans today, but here’s wishing him a speedy recovery!
