Political Marketing with Promotional Products on Election Day 2010

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Trending Topic Tuesday,” where we share our take on what’s going on in the world and what promotional products would appropriately (or inappropriately) market the subject matter.

Marketing has become an integral part of politics in the United States, which always becomes increasingly apparent as Election Day draws near: on our televisions, in our neighbors’ yards, and even attached to the clothing and car bumpers of many of our fellow citizens.  And while the first political campaign television ad debuted as a part of Dwight D. Eisenhower’s 1952 Presidential campaign, promotional products have been used for much longer.

This button, from William McKinley’s 1896 Presidential campaign, depicts the candidate on the revolutionary contraption known as the bicycle.  The distribution of this image on promotional products as part of McKinley’s political marketing campaign surely secured him the hipster vote.
