Last Wednesday, the world lost a visionary. Steve Jobs, co-founder and chairman of Apple Inc., passed away at the age of 56. Mr. Jobs leaves behind a legacy of innovation and technological advancement that will undoubtedly continue to drive creativity in the technology industry for years to come. Under his watchful eye, Apple released a number of hugely successful products like the iPod, iPhone, and iPad, each of which embody the minimalistic designs, simple to use interfaces, and reliability that are characteristic of the Apple brand.
Along with redefining the way personal tech gadgets look and function through his minimalistic design aesthetic, Jobs’ style preferences impacted the way he presented himself on a daily basis.
For most public appearances and press conferences, Jobs wore his trademark black mock turtleneck with jeans and sneakers. His black mock turtleneck of choice is manufactured by a company called St. Croix Collections and apparently he ordered about two dozen of the same $175 style each year. St. Croix is owned by Knitcraft Corp., which manufactures only between 4,000 and 5,000 of the turtlenecks per season.
Following the announcement of Jobs’ death, Knitcraft Corp. made a statement that they will be donating $20 to the American Cancer Society for every black mock turtleneck sold before October 16th. For more information and to support this movement, visit the St. Croix Collections website.
In an interview with BusinessWeek published in May, 1998, Jobs said, “That’s been one of my mantras – focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”
Thank you, Steve Jobs, for moving mountain after mountain during your lifetime to make the world a better place for us all. Your wisdom, insight, and commitment to innovation have not only altered the way we use technology, but they have inspired an entire generation to “think different.”
