Hello, local readers. Once again we’re here with your weekend guide, where we share our favorite things to do in and around Atlanta and point out where you can get free stuff along the way. As always, be sure to add anything we missed in the comments.


Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Center for Puppetry Arts. Thursday through January 2. Closed Nov. 25, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. $16 nonmembers; $9 members; ages 1 and younger free.

Don’t miss Artistic Director John Ludwig’s faithful adaptation of a classic tradition this holiday season at Atlanta’s Center for Puppetry Arts! “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” features 60 handmade puppets that are spot-on renditions of their counterparts from the original 1964 holiday special. Standard admission to the Center through January 2 includes admission to the performance, Create-a-Puppet workshop, and all museum exhibits.

Deadwood Saloon Turkey Shoot

Deadwood Saloon, Midtown. Friday, 5pm – 3am. Free.

The restaurant will offer half-price turkey burgers, $3 draft beer and Wild Turkey drink specials starting at 5pm. The actual shoot will then take place outside at 9pm on the back wall of Deadwood (directly behind the building). During this time, contestants will get the chance to take their best Nerf Gun shot at turkey targets on the wall. The winner will receive a trophy and FREE burgers for an entire year.

Indie Craft Experience Holiday Show

Ambient Plus Studio. Saturday and Sunday, 11am – 6pm. $5 (children 12 & under free).

Get all of your holiday shopping done early at the Indie Craft Experience’s 11th show. The Holiday Show features 100 of the best indie crafters from the Southeast, including Pinnacle’s own Melissa Rutledge, as well as tunes from DJ Zano. Whether you’re looking for homemade jewelry and purses or paper goods and soaps dedicated to different Atlanta neighborhoods, this don’t-miss event is full of goodies for the whole family. Plus, the first 250 attendees on each day will receive swag bags (reusable cotton totes) designed by local artists and filled with promo materials.

Atlanta Nutcracker Holiday Market

Cobb Galleria Center. Friday & Saturday, 10am – 7pm; Sunday 10am – 4pm. $8 for adults, $6 for kids 6-12 yrs and seniors (free admission for kids under 6).

This holiday market features vendors of every kind, and goods for sale include everything from holiday decorations to food and apparel gifts. This event is a great place to bring the kids to do some holiday shopping and take in a variety of musical and dance performances. Part of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Atlanta area charities. Advertising partners include Star94 FM, KICKS 101.5 FM, 104.7 FM THE FISH, The AJC, and WSB-TV Atlanta, so keep an eye out for lots of free giveaways!

The Lighting of Atlantic Station

Atlantic Station Central Park. Saturday, 12pm – 9pm. Free.

Atlantic Station boasts that its Christmas Tree Lighting event is Atlanta’s “first and brightest” Holiday celebration, and with good reason! After a day of fun for the whole family including make-and-take crafts, a Holiday fashion show, musical performances, and celebrity appearances, the flip will be switched on over 250,000 lights throughout the eight-block District area as Santa arrives, followed by a realistic snowfall at 8 and a free movie screening of a favorite holiday classic.

Buckhead Snuggie Pub Crawl

Gypsy Stag Lounge, Buckhead. Saturday, 1pm – 9pm. $5 advance, $10 at the door.

This pub crawl is the best excuse if you’re having one of those nights where you really want to go out but don’t feel like picking out the perfect outfit. Wrap a Snuggie, blanket or robe around yourself and head to the bar! Participating restaurants include: Red Door Tavern, Kramer’s, Pool Hall, 5 Paces Inn, East Andrews, Churchill’s, Tavern 99, ending at Buckhead Saloon with a costume contest. There will also be great food and drinks specials at each bar. Register for the Snuggie Pub Crawl from 1-8 p.m. at Gypsy Stag Lounge.
