Last night, I attended a 30 Seconds to Mars concert at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, Georgia. While I do not attend nearly the amount of concerts as I used to, I’m still a sucker for a great band, live music and the energy that emanates from the audience at a rock show.
While we had a great time listening to the music we love, I – being in the promotional products industry – couldn’t help but be attracted to the marketing and branding efforts going on throughout the entire event.
For starters, lead singer, Jared Leto, spent a great deal of time interacting with the crowd. He took requests, asked the crowd for input, called fans on stage and even took a picture of the crowd and posted it on Twitter, during the show!
I loved it.
Of course I had to find the picture of us he posted on his Twitter page. What better way to drive awareness of his band? I’m sure he got a ton of new followers from Atlanta last night. Who wouldn’t want to see their picture posted prominently on a favorite singer’s website?
And then to top it all off, the band stuck around post performance to sign the promotional products being sold at the merchandise stands. Of course they were just as willing to sign the old tees on the backs of their loyal concertgoers and fans, as they were the new ones being purchased. And those new ones were being purchased. The lines were ridiculously long. But I guess those t-shirts fly off the shelves with the promise of an autograph!
I have to say. I’ve been to quite a few concerts in my time, but this was one of the most interactive I’ve been to. And I’d venture to guess that this type of interaction will do wonders for their fan base. I bet they’ll be seeing a bunch of the people in that picture again the next time they’re in town!
